LED & Technology

What is an LED?

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a two-lead semiconductor light source. It is a basic pn-junction (positive-negative) diode, which emits light when connected to a power source. It generates far less heat than traditional light sources.

Early LEDs were often used as indicator lamps for electronic devices, replacing small incandescent bulbs, however technical advances have meant high-powered LEDs became a viable option for general lighting purposes.

See our LED Technology page for further information.

How do LEDs and metal halide lamps produce light?

LEDs and traditional light sources like metal halide lamps generate light in a substantially different way. Metal halide lamps generate light by passing an electric current through a combination of mercury and gas, whereas LEDs are a diode, which emits light when connected to a power source.

See our LED Technology page for further information.

What are the benefits of LED compared to metal halide?

When compared with metal halide, an LED luminaire uses significantly less energy to produce an equivalent amount of light. LEDs also require far less maintenance, such as lamp or ballast replacement. Less energy and less maintenance can equal significant cost savings each year.

LEDs also enjoy a longer lifetime, are more robust, generate less heat, offer advanced optical control and can be switched on and off instantly.

See our LED Technology page for further information.

Do LEDs contain any harmful chemicals or substances?

All our LED luminaires are RoHS compliant, meaning the use of certain hazardous materials (including lead, mercury and cadmium) is restricted in their manufacturing.

See our LED Sustainability page for further information.

My Cree Lighting exterior luminaire wasn’t supplied with a diffuser. I can see the LEDs directly. Is this correct?

Most Cree Lighting exterior products feature Cree’s NanoOptic® Precision Delivery Grid™ technology, which provides precise optical control for exceptional application performance and energy savings.

The NanoOptic® refractor system’s superior light control offers more lumens delivered in the target area, improved uniformity ratios and controlled high-angle brightness, no diffuser or face is required!

Product & Sales Enquiries

What’s the lead time on your products?

Lead times can vary, depending on the type of project or product required. We have a well-stocked warehouse with many products ready to ship immediately nationwide, however some products and special projects may need to be ordered from our suppliers, adding a slight lead time.

Contact us via the form at the bottom of this page to enquire about a specific product.

What’s spigot size is this product compatible with?

The spigot size for our products can vary, depending on the manufacturer or the application. Whilst many are available to fit on common sizes like 76mm or 60mm tenons or poles, we also offer a range of adapters to suit other pole or tenon sizes.

Spigot size and other mounting information can often be found in the technical sheets located on our website (see the ‘Downloads’ or ‘Variations’ tab of each product page).

Contact us via the form at the bottom of this page to enquire about a specific product.

Is this product available with a DALI driver / NEMA interface?

A wide range of our luminaires are available or compatible with DALI drivers and/or NEMA interfaces. Check the technical sheets located on our website (see the ‘Downloads’ or ‘Variations’ tab for each product page).

However, don’t despair if you can’t find what you’re looking for. Our suppliers invest heavily in research and development, meaning product advances and additions are occurring all the time!

Contact us via the form at the bottom of this page to enquire about a specific product.

Where do I find a data / spec sheet?

Technical, data or spec sheets for each product are located on our website. You can usually find them in the ‘Downloads’ or ‘Variations’ tab of each product page.
