Located in the Northern Rivers district of New South Wales, world-famous Byron Bay is a popular holiday destination for both domestic and international tourists. One of Byron’s most popular parks, Apex Park is located adjacent to the main beach, and is a vital community asset, often bustling with people all year round.
A long-overdue public lighting upgrade was commissioned after existing steel light poles in the park began to show signs of rust (perhaps as a result of prolonged exposure to salty ocean air). Byron Shire Council was quick to begin updating to recycled aluminium poles and LED luminaires, dramatically improving the lighting along the beach front in the process.
Advanced Lighting Technologies supplied Cree Lighting Edge Area Round luminaires, instantly improving the quality of light, while reducing the amount of energy used in comparison to the old HID luminaires.
The Cree Lighting Edge Area Round luminaires are also coated with Cree’s industrial-grade DeltaGuard finish, providing excellent resistance to corrosion, ultraviolet degradation and abrasion; the perfect luminaire to withstand exposure to the salty ocean air and other elements.
Special consideration also had to be given to native wildlife, with beaches surrounding Byron Bay popular with turtles during nesting season. Turtle-safe amber coloured LEDs were used strategically to ensure light pollution didn’t interfere with nesting and hatching schedules (amber LEDs don’t contain blue light that turtles can sometimes confuse as moonlight).
