In order to address car parking demand around one of Melbourne’s busiest retail and entertainment areas, Monash Council recently redeveloped Bogong Car Park in the heart of Glen Waverley.
The $40m+ extension added four additional levels of car parking, providing more than five hundred new spaces, taking total capacity to over one thousand. In addition to the extra parking spots, the redevelopment also included a new building facade featuring public art, upgraded lifts, electric vehicle charging bays, a parking assistance system, new wayfinding signage and photovoltaic solar panels to help power the building.
Advanced Lighting Technologies supplied a range of lighting solutions as part of the redevelopment, including the Cree Lighting Dot Series throughout all levels of the undercover car park, the Cree Lighting XSP Street & Area Light and ADLT DuraRail LED Batten on the rooftop and the Cree Lighting CPY Series Canopy Light for the transition zone on the ground floor.
Our solution was designed to achieve compliance with the light technical parameters listed in the relevant Australian Standards for car park lighting, including:
• AS/NZS 1680.2.1:2008 Interior and workplace lighting, Part 2.1: Specific applications – Circulation spaces and other general areas – Car Parks (Indoors).
• AS/NZS 1158.3.1:2020 Lighting for roads and public spaces, Part 3.1: Pedestrian area (Category P) lighting – Performance and design requirements – Cat PC (1) for Outdoor Car Parks.
These Standards specify parameters like minimum illuminance, uniformity ratio and glare limits required in car parks to provide a safe and visually comfortable environment, ensuring Bogong Car Park users feel safe walking to and from their vehicles, and that pedestrians are visible to drivers at all times.
The rooftop car park was also designed to achieve compliance with the recommendations for obtrusive light listed in AS/NZS 4282:2019 Control of the obtrusive effects of outdoor lighting (A3 – Medium District Brightness, Curfew).
