Boyd Park is a linear reserve in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs. Featuring a playground, open grass areas, shared paths and off-leash dog areas, it is well connected to public transport options and popular with locals for recreation.
Glen Eira City Council recently installed solar lighting along the park’s extensive network of shared pathways. The upgrade enables pedestrians and cyclists to feel safer and more comfortable using the route at night, while also aligning with Council’s broader sustainability goals by reducing both energy consumption and environmental impact.
Advanced Lighting Technologies supplied the Orca Solar Vertex SL Solar Lighting System combined with the Cree Lighting XSPM Street & Area Light as part of the upgrade. The systems were programmed to provide consistent light output all night, and designed to meet the requirements of AS/NZS 1158.3.1:2020 Lighting for Roads & Public Spaces (Pedestrian Area Lighting – Subcategory PP3). Any obtrusive light reaching neighbouring residential properties was minimised thanks to the NanoOptic® Precision Delivery Grid Optics built into the XSPM Series.

At Boyd Park, industry-leading solar calculation methods were deployed, using solar radiation data sourced from NASA to maximise sunshine capture year-round, while also accounting for potential shading from the park’s mature trees.
