The Regional Rail Revival is an investment by the Victorian and Australian Governments to upgrade every regional passenger line in Victoria, delivering more frequent and reliable services. Upgrades include new and improved stations, track and signalling improvements, and new train stabling facilities.
In the state’s south east, the Gippsland Line Upgrade is now complete. The project has enabled additional daily passenger services between Traralgon and Melbourne, improving access to education, employment and services for communities in this growing part of Victoria. The project included upgrades to four stations: Morwell, Bunyip, Longwarry and Traralgon.
Second platforms and new track have been installed at all four stations. Trains began travelling to and from the new platforms at Bunyip and Longwarry in 2024, improving journeys for passengers in these growing communities. The new platforms at Morwell and Traralgon began operating in August 2025.
The station upgrades also improved accessibility and amenities for passengers, including new car parking spaces, an improved underpass at Morwell and a new accessible overpass at Traralgon.
Advanced Lighting Technologies supplied the Cree Lighting XSP Street & Area Light for a variety of lighting applications as part of the Gippsland Line Upgrade, including platform lighting, pathway lighting, pedestrian ramp lighting and car park lighting.
Boasting a well-earned reputation, the XSP Series offers flexibility thanks to its modular design and choice of wattages, while its wide range of optics ensures uniform illumination is delivered only where required. Optional backlight shields were deployed where necessary to help ensure the lighting wouldn’t interfere with train driver’s visibility of their surroundings, including signalling. The XSP variants supplied on the Gippsland Line Upgrade project were also equipped with optional DALI dimming to offer maximum flexibility and control.
The ultimate aim of the Regional Rail Revival is to provide more frequent and reliable passenger rail services to better serve Victoria’s regional communities, and Advanced Lighting Technologies are proud to have played a small role in helping to achieve this.
