Wurdi Baierr Stadium

A new multi-purpose indoor sports centre (Wurdi Baierr Stadium – pronounced “word-ee bay-ear” – named after the Wadawurrung words for ‘big gathering place”) recently opened in Torquay, Victoria.

The $13.5 million facility was funded by the Surf Coast Shire Council, the Australian Government and the Victorian Government. The stadium comprises four multi-purpose courts, a café, meeting rooms, change facilities, all-abilities design features and additional car parking.

It’s a true mixed-use venue, hosting a myriad of sports and community activities such as basketball, netball, badminton, pickleball, karate and more.

The sports lighting within the stadium had to achieve the technical parameters recommended in the Australian Standard (AS/NZS 2560.2.2) for training and competition level basketball (an average light level of 500 lux across the playing surface). Ensuring compliance with the standard offers comfortable, even illumination for players, officials and spectators and allows every field goal, pass or play to be seen clearly from all angles.

Advanced Lighting Technologies supplied the Cree Lighting Stellar Highbay at Wurdi Baierr Stadium. A lightweight and robust luminaire, the Stellar was the ideal solution – combining a compact design with excellent performance.

The variants supplied to Wurdi Baierr Stadium featured 90° optics, 4000K CCT and DALI dimmable drivers, while glare is minimised thanks to the optional aluminium reflector which helps to shield the light source.

CHALLENGES

SOLUTIONS
• Cree Lighting Stellar Highbay

RESULTS
